For more than 36 years, SMDI Consultants, Inc. (SMDI) is always at the forefront of innovation in the transportation planning and traffic engineering industry. This 2021, SMDI teamed up with GoodVision Ltd. (Goodvision) in pursuit of developing an automated traffic data collection tool that is apt for the Philippines’ unique traffic flow characteristics.
Traffic data, such as vehicle turning movement counts, is the core of every traffic study therefore, collecting such information should be done in a consistent and reliable manner. Traditionally, these data are gathered on the filed manually by employing hundreds of surveyors on the field which has been proven, by experience, too cumbersome to manage and highly labor intensive.
Philippines is well known for having unique and highly specialized modes of transport. One of these peculiar modes is the iconic jeepney that has been plying along the roads of Metro Manila starting in the 1930s. Since then, the jeepney has evolved into different configurations from loud and colorful automobiles to a form the is visually resembles a contemporary coaster or minibus thus, classifying this type of public transport needs keen observation as these swiftly pass along busy and congested streets.
This are just some of the numerous challenges that SMDI and GoodVision would like to tackle in reaching their goal to provide automated data collection that is fast, accurate, and reliable. GoodVision has established their expertise in automated data collection using video recordings of streets and intersections through artificial intelligence (AI) technology. GoodVision’s platform has already been deployed successfully in numerous counties like Sweden, Poland, Ukraine, and Singapore generating outstanding outputs. Hoping that the next success story comes from the Philippines.
Both SMDI and GoodVision envision of making cities smarter to improve the quality of transportation through sound and reliable traffic data.
