The Firm

SMDI Consultants, Inc. In Profile

We are your partner in urban transport planning and traffic engineering.
THE SOLE DISTRIBUTOR OF PTV IN THE PHILIPPINES FOR MODELLING AND SIMULATION SOFTWARES.

Organized in August 1984 in Metro Manila, Philippines, SMDI has built a solid foundation in the traffic engineering and transport planning profession, as well as in comprehensive development planning  and urban development. Today, SMDI is an established and dynamic consultancy firm with a string of major accomplishments, backed by its pool of experienced urban transport and environmental planners, traffic engineers and simulation specialists.

SMDI is an active member of the Council of Engineering Consultants of the Philippines (CECOPHIL) since 1989.  Through its affiliation with its local and global network of consultancy firms from the Philippines, Japan, U.S.A, U.K. and Germany, SMDI has been involved in significant major projects for the Philippine government and the private sector. These projects have been funded by the Philippine government, in cooperation with leading international organizations/institutions, particularly Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), International Engineering Consulting Firms Association (IECA), International Association of Traffic & Safety Sciences (IATSS), Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the World Bank. Its private sector projects consist of major developments of land developers, infrastructure companies, healthcare/educational institutions and commercial/industrial corporations, to name a few: Ayala Land, Belle Corporation, Eton Properties, Federal Land, Filinvest, Geoestate Solutions, Landco, Ortigas & Company, PhilRealty Holdings, Robinsons Land Corporation, Rockwell Land Corporation, Shangri-la Properties, SM Development Corporation, SM Investments Corporation, Sta. Lucia Realty, Walter Mart; Cavite Infrastructure Corporation (CIC), Manila North Tollways Corporation (MNTC); St. Luke’s Medical Center, UST Hospital; Ateneo de Manila University, Assumption College; and Carmelray.

Over the years, SMDI has compiled a broad and wide ranging track record in the very specialized fields of transportation and traffic, and regional and urban planning. These include the development of comprehensive traffic/transportation data base and planning methodologies and conduct of various specialized studies for roads, railways, ports, airports, public transportation (LRT/jeepneys/buses), and urban/rural/regional development projects, including their respective infrastructures.  As can be gleaned from its inventory of projects, SMDI’s traffic engineering and  planning studies have come up with sound traffic management plans, addressing such concerns as:  infrastructure planning, traffic management and control facilities, traffic signals, parking facilities and operations, traffic circulation and access, geometric improvements of road sections and intersections, pedestrian demand and facilities, public transport loading/unloading facilities, intermodal linkages, parking demand and facilities.

In 1999, SMDI became the sole distributor in the Philippines of specialized traffic software products developed by PTV Group of Germany. The PTV Group provides software and consulting services for transport and logistics. Be it transport routes or structures, private or public transport – they plan and optimise everything which moves people and goods worldwide. The PTV package of softwares distributed by SMDI is a very useful and user-friendly tool for the evaluation of various alternatives based on transportation engineering and planning measures of effectiveness. These softwares are:

  • VISUM: the world’s leading software for traffic analyses, forecasts and GIS-based data management, which consistently models all road users and their interactions and has become a recognized standard in the field of transport planning. Transportation experts use PTV Visum to model transport networks and travel demand, to analyze expected traffic flows, to plan public transport services and to develop advanced transport strategies and solutions.
  • VISSIM: the world’s leading micro-simulation program for multi-modal traffic flow modelling. It allows planners to model the routes and interactions of all road users. It realistically simulates multimodal transport processes like no other software.
  • VISWALK: realistically simulates and analyses walking behavior as no other software does. Planners use this powerful software tool whenever pedestrian flows need to be simulated and analyzed – be it in and outside the building.
  • VISTRO: all-in-one solution for traffic analysis needs, where one can analyze traffic operations, evaluate new development impacts and optimize signal timing. It can be used to analyze an intersection, a corridor, or an entire network.

PTV softwares are currently used by over 2000 organizations in more than 90 countries worldwide, including the following organizations in the Philippines:

  • De la Salle University (DLSU)
  • Department of Public Works & Highways (DPWH)
  • KIV
  • Manila North Tollways Corporation (MNTC)
  • Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA)
  • Traffic Supplies and Construction Corporation (TSCC)
  • University of the Philippines National Center for Transportation Studies (UPNCTS)

PTV in the Philippines is supported by the Asia-Pacific operations, with offices in Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia, with Singapore as its regional headquarters.
